A brief history of Swinton
Swinton dates back to at least the 11th century and gave its name to the Swinton family (Clan Swinton), one of the oldest recorded landowning families in Scotland, who still hold a burial enclosure in the village churchyard. In 1769 the village was redesigned around a new market, marked today by its surviving market cross.
The parish church, remodelled in 1910 by the noted Scottish architect Robert Lorimer, still stands at the heart of the village, while a former Free Church building from 1843 later became the village hall after its spire was removed in the early 20th century. Swinton is also linked to Daniel Laidlaw, a recipient of the Victoria Cross, Britain's highest award for gallantry.
