A brief history of Branxton
Branxton is a small Northumberland village forever tied to one of the most consequential battles in British history. On 9 September 1513, an invading Scottish army under King James IV met an English force led by the Earl of Surrey on the slopes of nearby Branxton Hill, in what became known as the Battle of Flodden — the largest battle ever fought between England and Scotland. James IV was killed, along with much of the Scottish nobility, in a defeat that plunged Scotland into decades of instability.
Branxton's parish church is said to have served as a temporary mortuary for the battle's dead, and a granite memorial cross was erected on Piper Hill in 1910 to commemorate the fallen of both nations. Today the village remains tiny and quiet, with the battlefield trail, signposted from the A698, drawing visitors from across the Borders and beyond.
