A brief history of Kelso

Kelso grew up around Kelso Abbey, a Benedictine (originally Tironensian) monastery founded in 1128 at the confluence of the Tweed and Teviot. Skilled craftsmen brought by the monks helped the settlement flourish, and the abbey controlled much of local life until the Reformation and its dissolution in 1545. Like most Border towns, Kelso was repeatedly fought over, attacked and garrisoned during centuries of Anglo-Scottish conflict.

Much of the town centre dates from the Georgian and Victorian rebuilding that followed, laid out around what is still the largest cobbled market square in Scotland, with the Town Hall completed in 1816. Sir Walter Scott, who lived nearby, once called Kelso "the most beautiful, if not the most romantic, village in Scotland," and it was in Kelso that his Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border was first printed in 1802.

Just outside town stands Floors Castle, designed by architect William Adam and completed in 1726, the largest inhabited castle in Scotland and still home to the Duke of Roxburghe. The elegant Kelso Bridge over the Tweed, opened in 1803, was designed by John Rennie, who went on to build London's original Waterloo Bridge. Kelso also holds two extreme UK weather records: the coldest January temperature ever recorded, -26.7°C in 1881, and Scotland's hottest ever day, 35.1°C, recorded in July 2022.
