A brief history of Coldstream

Coldstream sits at one of the most historically significant crossing points on the River Tweed, the river that forms much of the border between Scotland and England. It was here in 1296 that Edward I led his army into Scotland, and the town's exposed position on the frontier meant it was fought over repeatedly during the centuries of conflict that followed, including the 1316 Battle of Skaithmuir just to the north, and its proximity to the Flodden battlefield, six miles to the southeast, where James IV was killed in 1513.

The town's name is inseparable from the Coldstream Guards, the British Army regiment first raised here around 1650 under General George Monck. In 1660 the regiment marched from Coldstream to London, playing a central role in the Restoration of King Charles II, and it remains one of the oldest continuously serving regiments in the British Army today.

Coldstream's location on the border also gave it an unusual sideline: like Gretna Green further west, its bridge over the Tweed made it a popular spot for runaway English couples to marry under Scots law, with ceremonies once carried out at the town's Marriage House by the bridge. Coldstream Parish Church, built in 1718 with its distinctive square tower, still stands on the High Street, alongside the Marjoribanks Monument on the riverbank and, more recently, the Admiral Ramsay Museum at Bughtrig House, opened in 2023 to honour Vice-Admiral Sir Bertram Ramsay's role in the planning of Dunkirk and D-Day.
